Ornamental Pears

Pyrus calleryana 'Autumn Blaze'
Autumn Blaze Callery pear

This cultivar's claim to fame is its excellent wine red fall color, along with wide branch angles. It is slightly more tolerant of cold than the other callery pear selections, but exhibits some problems with fireblight.

Habit: Pyramidal to pyramidal-rounded, with branches at right angles to the leader
Size: 40' high by 30' wide
Color: Glossy dark green in summer, changing to a consistent excellent wine red in autumn
Hardiness: Zone 5a/4b USDA
Family: Rosaceae

Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer'
Chanticleer Callery pear

The Chanticleer pear has a narrower pyramidal habit than 'Bradford', and good fireblight resistance, but has a less showy fall color. Flower displays are just as showy, and the clean foliage is attractive throughout the summer months, presenting a slightly finer texture due to the narrowness of the leaves. It does not appear to have the problems with ice damage that are so prevalent with 'Bradford.'

Habit: Narrow pyramidal, very uniform, multiple leaders, formal
Size: 30-50' high by 15-20' wide
Color: Glossy dark green in summer, changing to a moderate purple-red in autumn
Hardiness: Zone 5a USDA
Family: Rosaceae

Pyrus calleryana 'New Bradford'

New Bradford Callery pear

New Bradford Pear is a greatly improved selection of the old favorite flowering pear. It has a much better branching habit that makes it more resistant to wind damage. This flowering pear is covered in a profusion of white blossoms in the spring. The foliage is especially glossy dark green.

Habit: Rounded pyramidal with erect stems, formal, uniform; cultivars extremely uniform
Size: 50' high
Color: Dark green, turning red-purple in fall
Hardiness: Zone 5a USDA
Family: Rosaceae
